K Series
In response to the partial reopening during the 2021 pandemic, the Kaohsiung Film Archive launched the “K Series” project—a collection of ultra-short films titled with the letter “K.” The “K” stands for both Kaohsiung and the spirit of “K.O.”—knocking out all restrictions and limitations brought by the pandemic. Shot entirely in Kaohsiung and produced in less than two months, these short films overcame countless obstacles during the COVID era. Each bite-sized story bursts with creative power, reflecting the life struggles five emerging directors sought to break through—be it the fading traces of the old city, familial bonds in a movie theater, generational conflict between mother and daughter, the desolate search for queer desire in an apocalyptic world, or the vicious cycle of gossip and rumors in the internet age. With each story shaped by a distinct directorial voice, the “K Series” showcases the boundless creative possibilities that emerged in the shadow of a global crisis.
War Documentaries
Some sacrifice countless lives for personal gain. Others, in the darkest and most fragile moments, reveal the noblest of virtues. From the abandoned remains of concentration camps, to journalists risking everything on the frontlines of the Middle East, to fractured peoples grappling with identity— these stories are haunting testimonies against the atrocities of humankind. Giloo presents five powerful documentaries that confront unhealed traumas. As long as pain persists, war cannot truly be over.
Carnival Downstairs
This annual campaign, centered on amplifying the voices of those with lived experiences of poverty, is themed this year around “Home.” For some, home is a space of safety. For others, it’s wherever their loved ones are. For many, a fixed address is necessary just to access social welfare. Through a series of in-person events and curated online screenings, we aim to expand society’s understanding of “home” beyond conventional frameworks—to open a window to new imaginings of what home can be. This “window” represents not only a small yet vital need for many renters, but also a passage through which marginalized voices can reach the wider world. By opening this window, we invite society to embrace the realities of those on the margins—and in doing so, unlock new possibilities for how we all live today.
Under the Ground
Unheard wishes. Unanswered cries. “Who cares? We’re just the ones left behind.” In the margins of society, lives unfold far from the spotlight. This is an invitation—not to save, but to witness. To step into the shadows, and truly see.
