1961 年，马家在熬过了日本人暴行与战后的辛苦，终于迎来平稳幸福的生活。但命运无情，马家两老突然罹患了绝症肺结核。为了让父母免于病痛折磨，马水生伙同兄弟们，瞒着视土地如生命的父亲卖地，只为凑钱向陈医生买吗啡针。终于，在父母患病三年之后，马水生必须在家族仅存的最后一块土地与甫出生的儿子间作出艰难的抉择。
