《白日青春》是定居在香港的馬來西亞編劇及導演劉國瑞的首部劇情長片。身為第四代馬來西亞華人的他，從小便在充滿異鄉人的環境中成長。導演透露自己搬到香港後，幾乎和父親失去聯繫。尤其他離開馬來西亞時，還只是個少年，所以必須自己學習如何成為一個男人。這也讓他將自己的成長經驗融入到本片劇本當中，刻劃一個渴望父愛的孩子，以及一個掙扎該如何理解兒子的父親的故事。導演對此表示：「這兩個角色刻劃了我的移民生活，而我視這部作品為我及父親之間的對話。」 本片將鏡頭對準特殊的難民議題，揭開香港的隱祕暗角。尤其香港是國際難民的中轉站，每年都有數以千計的難民，在這座城市等待政府審批他們的難民資格，而在這個漫長的過程當中，可能一等就會超過十年。這也讓導演在拍攝香港難民題材的紀錄片時，特別有所感觸；尤其他面對的最大挑戰，就是普通人常質疑這是難民自己的選擇：「事實上，難民通常是沒有選擇的。他們在時代的波動下，從一個地方漂泊到另一個地方，而他們的後代就在這種漂泊中出世、成長。因此，我想要拍一個關於難民和香港人的電影，一個難民終於作出選擇的故事。」
