Why did someone like Gorbachev—who tried so hard to reform his country—ultimately meet a dramatic and tragic end? Why did a Chinese teenager, once full of unquestioning patriotism, become a disillusioned critic of society? And how does a taxidermist, working with lifeless animals, come to glimpse the mysterious kingdom of death? The team at Chichi’s Notes has handpicked 13 standout documentaries from Giloo—recommended for those who care about current affairs and remain endlessly curious about the world. Whether you're drawn to politics, identity, science, or the unseen corners of society, this collection offers something for every thoughtful viewer.

From international politics and music to film industry professionals and cultural icons—this curated selection of biographical documentaries offers intimate, eye-level encounters with influential figures across diverse fields. Through the lens, we gain rare insights into their lesser-known sides, and follow them as they navigate cultural clashes, personal revelations, and shifting global contexts. Each film invites you to explore contemporary issues through the lived experiences of extraordinary individuals shaped by history.
“When life hits a low, just say: I’m heading out.” Bhutan, Istanbul, Hokkaido, Siberia...Follow the protagonists in these films as they set off—whether in search of something, or simply trying to escape. Let their journeys lead you into unfamiliar lands and unexpected moments. As the new year begins, take a step away from the noise. Give yourself the gift of a healing journey—a chance to reset, rediscover, and roam free.

This is a labyrinth of underground caves—each one distinct in style, each both a hidden space and a form of revelation. In The River, the cave takes the shape of secret doors—behind each, encounters that are either redemptive or forbidden. In The Act of Killing, the entrance is brutally exposed: a body split open, revealing cruelty with no filter. Before the Dawn offers a cave of mazes—guided by clear narration, and yet, we fall into a thick fog of disoriented images. A Morning in Taipei is a time-traveling cave—Lim Giong’s soundtrack transforms the past into a self-contained cosmos, where even fleeting moments feel eerily contemporary. Marina Abramović in Brazil leads us inward—to the cave within. Through extreme rituals and faith-fueled intensity, she seeks peace, confronting energies too blinding to look at directly.

To document an extraordinary soul through the lens is to constantly wrestle with the dilemma of completeness. How can one capture the vastness of a life within the limited time of a film? It challenges the filmmaker’s depth of understanding and precision of perspective. Rather than striving for an all-encompassing portrait, it may be more powerful to focus on select moments—those glimmers that illuminate the subject’s essence. The camera becomes not only a tool to pierce through the surface, but also a means for sincere conversation with the person in front of it.
"Every part of the body has its own memory. All the trauma we’ve experienced is stored in our bodies."—Marina Abramović While curating this special Giloo playlist—limited to just five films—I slowly discovered what I truly care about. I’ve always felt that people are fragile. Everyone carries moments of sadness, loneliness, and pain. After much inner struggle, I chose five films that have accompanied me through some of the most significant times in my life. Each time I press play, the tears come naturally. I deeply believe in the healing power of cinema—its ability to connect people from vastly different walks of life through shared emotions. We are never truly alone. And I hope, through these films, we can all find a little strength and courage to shift our reality, even just a bit.
