Across hand-drawn animation, stop motion, and digital imagery, Taiwan’s emerging animation directors give new form to bodies, memories, and everyday life. In response to the question “Who are we?”, each filmmaker begins from their own position, allowing the island’s diverse and vital experiences to offer their own answers through moving images.
Animation director Yang Zixin, who hails from Taichung, has a remarkable ability to capture the subtle moments of everyday life in Taiwan—moments that feel deeply familiar, yet are often difficult to put into words: the play of light and shadow on a street corner, the sounds drifting through narrow alleyways, and the unspoken distance and warmth between people. Within these seemingly ordinary scenes, Yang reflects on the ways we observe, experience, and look back on life. Through his images, viewers may also recognize a sense of intimacy and familiarity that feels distinctly Taiwanese.
