In Darjeeling, a small town at the foot of the Indian Himalayas, Tashi, a devout Tibetan Buddhist monk, is sent to Japan to continue his spiritual practice. There, he meets an eccentric elderly man and his granddaughter, Emi, who is out on parole. As Tashi gradually gets to know them, the lonely Emi and Tashi slowly grow closer, and a forbidden affection begins to emerge between them.
