Hou Hsiao-hsien, the visionary director who brought Taiwan New Cinema to the global stage, is known for his contemplative long takes and a visual language uniquely his own. “Darkness,” he once said, “comes from reality and absurdity.” Rejecting artifice, Hou captures the everyday with piercing honesty, rendering moments we all can relate to—whether it’s childhood sweethearts struggling in the city, disillusioned gangsters drifting through life, or a lone assassin bound by fate. Join Giloo in refocusing on the present, and see the island through Hou Hsiao-hsien’s lens: a poetic realism shaped by his profound love for this land.
Tien-Wen Chu, the eldest of the Chu sisters, is not only one of Taiwan’s most important contemporary novelists, but also the longtime screenwriter for acclaimed director Hsiao-hsien Hou. She has penned scripts for 15 of Hou’s films, and has won the Golden Horse Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay three times. Giloo Documentary presents five Hou Hsiao-hsien films written by Chu T’ien-wen, inviting you to step into the cinematic worlds they’ve so delicately crafted—their very best of times.
Even in the face of noble causes, pure love demands its due. There may be no childhood promises of marriage, nor grand vows to take you to the moon — But here lies a love that is the purest, most romantic kind: A little mad, a little stubborn, but always about love. Through five timeless classics, this curated playlist explores stories of pure love forged in turbulent times — How the weight of history shaped love's innocence, and its inevitable heartbreak.
The contemporary world is accelerating; battling with time and efficiency has become a daily routine for most. But the faster we go, the blurrier some things become, to the point of being unheard or unseen. Thus, within the span of a single film, through several deeply contemplative "gazes," it's possible to discover that "slowing down" is, in fact, a very, very, very beautiful thing. By immersing ourselves in this slow spirit through cinema, some things finally become clear, and then, they can be heard and seen.
Initiated by the Association of the Visual Arts in Taiwan (AVAT), the "City Running Archives Cultural Games" combines with the "Taiwan Contemporary Art Archive" website to transform Dadaocheng into an urban cultural database. The event integrates three major elements: "contemporary art," "historical sites," and "cultural movement," converting the concepts of artworks into athletic challenges and workshops. Audiences can participate in interactive experiences and, by utilizing NFC technology, link their phones to browse artists' works online, opening up a brand new experience for public art.
