Giloo presents a curated selection of finalists and award-winning works from the Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF), capturing the trajectories of individual lives shaped by era shifts, social structures, and cultural traditions. The narrative scope expands from the frontlines of war and resistance to everyday anxieties, the complexities of tradition, and philosophical reflections on the soul. The lens shifts from macro-level upheavals to an intimate gaze. We witness individuals seeking exits from systemic oppression, debating existence through traditional rituals, and attempting to summon lost souls through song and imagination amidst the embers of trauma. This is a profound dialogue that delves into the subtle nuances of life, inviting you to experience the true weight of memory and action.

Since 2024, Giloo has officially launched its international viewing service, joining hands with creators around the world to present a curated selection of over a hundred acclaimed films. From award-winning festival titles and popular feature films to thought-provoking documentaries, Giloo brings together diverse themes and compelling stories — inviting you to a cinematic feast that transcends borders.
Let us look through cinema at a group of people marginalized by their times, such as the stranded Kuomintang soldiers in Northern Thailand, and the Roma people who lack national protection. While some works focus on individuals, they can represent a collective destiny, including political victim Ko Chi-hwa, Kim Ryon-hui, the woman who vowed to return to her homeland North Korea, and Björn Andrésen, the beautiful boy deprived of his childhood. The unique charm of film lies in its ability to lead us to see sights and human figures we might never encounter in our lifetime.
In resonance with the 2024 TIDF (Taiwan International Documentary Festival) theme, Giloo has curated 10 past TIDF nominated or award-winning films. We invite you to explore an alternative reality of the world through the lenses of labor, protest, and migration.
Sometimes, you’re drawn back to the scene by an unseen force—treading carefully, almost fearfully. The crime scenes where bloodstains have long been washed away, the streets where fervent slogans have faded, and the lives forever frozen in a single moment of history—all compel creators to pick up the pen, to lift the camera, and to tell their stories in countless ways. Rooted in reality, the act of creation becomes a delicate balance. Is it a faithful record, an excavation of truth? A transformation of reality? Or a search for meaning in the present? Imagination may run wild, but what is the thread that keeps pulling him back—again and again—to the real?
An elderly political prisoner battling Alzheimer’s, a ghostwriter who starts a martial arts film company after release, a teenage boy drifting between virtual networks and real life, an old woman singlehandedly raising her intellectually disabled son, a directionally challenged writer carrying 37 keys, a father whose voice is ignored both in life and death, and a banyan tree that has silently witnessed decades of neighborhood change. How do they confront the challenges and setbacks brought by society? Continuing the acclaim of the previous three editions, Giloo now presents the fourth wave of its “Taiwan Shorts Knockout” series—seven powerful short films that delve into the everyday struggles and stories unfolding in Taiwanese society.
To feel indifferent to history is to feel indifferent to Taiwan. The year 2014 was a time of great upheaval in Taiwan—a year of radical change and explosive thought. For many, it was a moment to reexamine their relationship with this land and to delve deeper into the essence of what Taiwan truly is. It was also the year that Taiwan Bar and The Story were born. The right to speak for ourselves is something generations of Taiwanese people have long pursued. We hope to leave behind a work that is open to everyone—not just something for this generation, but a legacy passed from us to the next, and then on to many generations to come. Support the “New Taiwan History Movement” and help bear witness to Taiwan’s history!
