Recently, in a novel I've come to love, I found myself grasping the weight of life's slices. In the story, there is a wicked sorcerer who freezes people in the instant just before tragedy strikes—suspending everything, sealing it into a crystal ball, and building an entire museum from these frozen moments. And isn't film, in its own way, just as cruel? As viewers, we are little more than instruments for collecting tissue slices—slipping into a character's world for a single fleeting moment, wandering through it in passing, only to return, in the blink of an eye, to the reality that is our own.

When the familiar surface of reality begins to crack, another set of rules governing time, space, and life quietly comes into motion. Through lines, textures, and sound, animation creates universes that have never existed, allowing unfamiliar creatures and strange landscapes to emerge from the imagination. As we pass through these cracks, we encounter not only other worlds, but also another side of reality yet to be discovered.
This program features 10 short films from the 2022 "Kaohsiung Shorts" series, spanning narrative, animation, and experimental genres. From urban legends to rural folktales, these diverse and imaginative works reflect the whimsical and fantastical dimensions of contemporary society.
