Everything changes; the only constant is change itself. Young people who encounter life-altering upheavals face life and death, joy and sorrow. At life’s turning points, the choices they make reveal who these protagonists truly are. Within these stories, we may see reflections of ourselves—or find lives far removed from our own. Yet they always help us understand one another, allowing us, over ten to a few dozen minutes, to experience, grow, and comfort each other together. In a world of ever-shifting circumstances, perhaps cinema is a faithful companion that walks alongside us.
Are children inherently innocent? And what kinds of struggles do teenagers face while growing up? Here are 5 selected short films that invite us, as adults, to re-enter the world of children and adolescents, in an attempt to get a little closer to them.
Once upon a time, there were stories in the landscapes. A mother’s quiet anxiety stretched across the winter plains of Inner Mongolia; a boy grew up in the windswept fishing villages of Taiwan; two scruffy children plotted their passage to adulthood in a withered cornfield; an artist-filmmaker captured the homesickness of the Burmese Chinese community on Huaxin Street, New Taipei; and a goldfish fable unfolded within the narrow, suffocating streets of Hong Kong. In these films, landscapes are more than mere cinematic settings; they are rich with symbolism and reflect the inner worlds of the characters.
