Even amidst displacement, struggle, suffering, longing, and poverty, the ability to feel the freedom of will and spirit is what makes us human, and subsequently, a Taiwanese person standing tall on this cherished island.
Through documentaries, we are able to step into issue frontlines that are often inaccessible in everyday life. Gender, LGBTQ+, labor, ethnicity, migrant workers, environmental protection… This curated list showcases a selection of documentaries that delve deeply into diverse social issues. From the dark corners of child sexual abuse to plastic recycling factories at the end of the global waste stream, these films lead viewers to confront hidden realities and listen to voices that deserve to be heard.
The world is on the brink of collapse. What do you see? In this chaotic era, reality often proves stranger than fiction. Human greed, anger, ignorance, and endless desires and attachments lead to all sorts of uncontrolled and absurd behaviors: authoritarianism reigns, fame and fortune are paramount, violence is rampant, human rights are trampled... The world is gradually collapsing, as if on the verge of destruction. Through cinema, these insane visions are recreated, and as we watch, we remind ourselves to preserve that last shred of kindness and humanity.
Does our nation's treatment of minority groups truly live up to the beautiful name "Formosa"? Migrant workers who perish far from home, fishermen and sex workers on the fringes of the city… they leave their homes behind to make a living, only to face discrimination, exhaustion, and even restrictive, unequal laws. On one side lies a struggling homeland, on the other, a new land that offers no refuge—where, then, do outsiders truly belong?
Sometimes, you’re drawn back to the scene by an unseen force—treading carefully, almost fearfully. The crime scenes where bloodstains have long been washed away, the streets where fervent slogans have faded, and the lives forever frozen in a single moment of history—all compel creators to pick up the pen, to lift the camera, and to tell their stories in countless ways. Rooted in reality, the act of creation becomes a delicate balance. Is it a faithful record, an excavation of truth? A transformation of reality? Or a search for meaning in the present? Imagination may run wild, but what is the thread that keeps pulling him back—again and again—to the real?
