普遍被認為是「馬來西亞電影新浪潮」人物之一的陳翠梅,不管是長片或是短片,在她電影中的人物、行動總是在日常生活中閃現著許多飽富哲思又趣味的巧思。縱使今日的電影環境早已大為不同,但她的某些靈巧與拍攝的機動性,從早期作品一路到近作都仍然清晰可辨。要認識這些屬於她個人非常標誌性的特質,我們不得不從她最開始投入電影創作的初期嘗試中獲得一些得以理解的線索。
A homesick wanderer torn between love and duty. A transgender girl fleeing a correctional school, time and again. A drift through the city to find a massive rock once glimpsed with a friend. A pregnant woman embarking on an absurd journey to find her dolphin man... In the face of these raw and dazzling images, there’s no need to stay sober. In every era, certain films persist as hidden gems, burning quietly their spectral flames in corners where nobody notices. Spectral, for having been buried by the arbitrary nature of its era, or from years of forgottenness in obscurity; Spectral, also for the fact that they give form to an internal, invisible burning within, weeping aloud in a deafening silence. With this programme, I hope to orchestrate encounters between these films and audiences who might not have realized their need for them. They do not yet know that they yearn for those spectral flames to flare up within their screen, to sting and scorch their yearning heart.
