A single grain of rice nourishes a hundred kinds of people—though rooted in Asia, each land holds its own distinct character. Giloo presents ten handpicked documentaries on customs and religions, journeying from East Asia to Central Asia to reveal the countless faces of this vast continent.
Film is one of the fastest ways to get to know a country. In just an hour or so, a movie can take you through its streets, speak its language, and tell its stories from the inside out. Don’t worry—we’re not here to dive into complex geopolitical debates. In this film program, you’ll meet a wild rock band raising chaos in North Korea, a group of Danish men who really love to drink, and witness the everyday madness of the Russian “warrior people” through dashcam footage. These films don’t aim to explain entire nations. Instead, they focus on the little things—the strange, funny, messy bits of daily life. And isn’t it exactly these small moments that, together, make up the kaleidoscope of a country?

Faith is a dwelling place of the heart—a quiet sense of belonging, of ease, of return. Do you believe the world is kind to you today? Have you ever wondered why you were born into this world? As a part of nature, of all living things—where do you stand?
Through documentary works, we aim to lead audiences in contemplating talent sustainability and the power of visual media's influence on the environment. This will accelerate international connections, facilitate the commercial implementation of solutions, and scale impact to infinite possibilities.

Since the Industrial Revolution, Japan’s path to modernization—beginning with the Meiji Restoration—seems to have established a distinct cultural attitude: the ability to preserve long-standing traditions while continuously reinventing them. After WWII, Japan made a remarkable recovery and quickly rose to global prominence, its cultural influence spreading across the world. For someone like me—born in the 1980s in Taiwan—this familiarity with Japanese culture feels second nature. As a student of Western classical music, I often find that this aesthetic of fusion, and even the lifestyle it reflects, plays a guiding and inspiring role in my creative process. The five selected works—covering religion, food, film, craftsmanship, and nature (intentionally excluding music)—may seem diverse, but each explores the same underlying tension and harmony between permanence and transformation. In a world where we constantly face global pressure and existential questions, this deep cultural foundation offers a quiet but powerful source of strength—especially for those of us who stand on the side of the challengers.

Japan—a land of paradox and fascination—has long captivated travelers from afar. With deep-rooted traditions that have withstood over 150 years of rapid Westernization, Japan continues to preserve a unique national identity and way of life, while also giving rise to a distinct and globally influential pop culture. This month, Giloo Documentaries presents a curated selection of films that explore the many faces of Japan. Journey with us across mountains and oceans, through surface and depth—encountering the worlds of fashion, Takarazuka theater, love hotels, fine cuisine, robotics, and contemporary art. Modern Japan is vibrant, eclectic, and often wildly unexpected—and these films capture its raw, untamed spirit.

While watching a film, you’ve surely thought—if only I were there. Whether it’s the breathtaking landscapes or the long, winding paths walked by the characters, something pulls you in. John Berger once asked, “Did you come by photograph or by train? Every photograph is a means of transportation.” Let these documentaries be letters from afar— delicate invitations to places you’ve never imagined, and journeys you’ve never taken.
In 2022, we find ourselves constantly surrounded by art. The devotion, creativity, and craftsmanship poured into a single garment by a designer — that is wearable art. The serenity we feel when venturing into the mountains or stepping into a temple — that is reverence for nature, the most organic form of art. To the artist, art can be a precise calculation, a challenge to the limits, or a stirring portrayal of the masses and their stories. Art can even be a radical force for social change. Long before you ever “knew” art, it had already seeped into your everyday life. On this sleepless night, take to the familiar streets and experience the resonance created when art intervenes in the city.
