Who says animation is only for kids? As we fall out of childhood and into adulthood, reality and imagination start weaving the world we live in—blurring, tangling, never quite clear. From the identity struggles of Hong Kong’s queer community, to the quiet battles of the working class, to the existential weight carried by city dwellers—these complex, three-dimensional selves are often flattened into frames we can’t say aloud or capture on film. And beyond each frame lies reality, projecting itself back at us—whispering softly, shouting underneath.
In the playground of short animations, established narrative frameworks are shattered. Sensibility breaks free from the shackles of human form, finding freedom in the world of images. From the whimsical love between human and beast to the dogs nurtured upon the skin, here we transform, merge, fracture, and reassemble— finding a five-minute respite.
“As the saying goes, in martial arts, speed is everything.” To me, short animation is more than a space for experimentation and self-training—it’s where ideas are rapidly tested within limited duration, using refined visuals and sound to cut straight to the essence of storytelling. One night, I watched several shorts in a row—dreamlike and surreal, blending the absurd with realism, tenderness, and wit. Though brief and diverse in style, they leave a lasting emotional and intellectual resonance. They convinced me that short animation is a contemporary craft of speed, precision, and impact—striking straight to the core.
