我們為什麼要在乎史蒂夫・班農？作為川普所代表意識形態的基進反對者，我對於班農，這位幕後操盤協助川普當選2016年的美國總統，卻又迅速被川普冷落並檯面上拉開距離的右翼政治人物，總是有一股由內而生的強大厭惡感，同時與無以名狀的好奇並存。班農曾擔任過川普時代七個月的美國白宮首席策略長，又在2017年中的在夏洛茨維爾鎮（Charlottesville）的「團結右翼集會」（Unite the Right）右派崛起暴力事件失控之後，被川普解除於白宮職位，並大量公開詆毀班農。

本片主角史蒂芬班農是何方人物？正值美國總統大選烽火綿延之際，我們該如何看待班農，以及他得以興風作浪的當代政治歷史和媒體情境？一個右翼份子、愛看片的影迷，哈佛商學院畢業，曾在高盛銀行工作，當過好萊塢製片和導演，曾參與主導惡名昭彰的右翼網站Breitbart News，在2016年操盤協助川普首度競選美國總統的選戰，並一度進入白宮獻策逾半年之久，大力推動川普的穆斯林旅遊禁令和美墨邊境築牆政策。

我剛遇到班農的時候，一開始暫定的片名是《鏡子》（Looking Glass），因為我覺得我好像穿過了那面鏡子，身處在一個反轉的世界，所有我覺得是壞的事物被當作是好的，而我認為這個國家好的事物則正被系統性地摧毀。看到一個充滿希望和史蒂芬．班農合照的人們的世界非常令我震驚。最後我們決定將片子定為 The Brink（邊緣），我們希望找到一個不會支撐他、或加強他，但屬於他身分語彙的名字
