Why did someone like Gorbachev—who tried so hard to reform his country—ultimately meet a dramatic and tragic end? Why did a Chinese teenager, once full of unquestioning patriotism, become a disillusioned critic of society? And how does a taxidermist, working with lifeless animals, come to glimpse the mysterious kingdom of death? The team at Chichi’s Notes has handpicked 13 standout documentaries from Giloo—recommended for those who care about current affairs and remain endlessly curious about the world. Whether you're drawn to politics, identity, science, or the unseen corners of society, this collection offers something for every thoughtful viewer.
In this universe, I’ve achieved nothing. In every universe, he loves her. Every page turned, every frame played—we enter your private universe: vast, boundless, infinite. In 2022, Everything Everywhere All at Once took pop culture by storm, flinging us across chaotic multiverses only to land us back in the deeply personal struggles of an Asian American family. The 2023 Taipei International Book Exhibition adopted “The Multiverse” as its central theme. To TAAZE, every reader’s private reading list is its own Ma-verse. And for this occasion, Giloo has curated 10 films to join the multiverse spin. Universe spin, timeline split— who says it can’t be a resistance?
"To me, only Lily Chou-Chou is real." Japanese auteur Shunji Iwai carved out some of the most unforgettable depictions of the pain and poetry of youth. His films delve not only into school days and adolescence, but also bullying, loss, and the end-of-century malaise. He portrays girls in corrupted cities, women with voices that heal, and parables of a world teetering on the edge. He launched the careers of singers Salyu and Chara, and captured Aoi Yuu in her most ethereal dance. With his singular visual style and impeccable taste in music, Iwai's works have captivated audiences across Asia for over two decades.
