The 76th Festival de Cannes officially kicked off in 2023, bringing together filmmakers and cinephiles from around the world. Before this year’s winners are revealed, Giloo invites you to revisit 15 unmissable international gems from past editions—essential viewing for any Cannes enthusiast.
In this universe, I’ve achieved nothing. In every universe, he loves her. Every page turned, every frame played—we enter your private universe: vast, boundless, infinite. In 2022, Everything Everywhere All at Once took pop culture by storm, flinging us across chaotic multiverses only to land us back in the deeply personal struggles of an Asian American family. The 2023 Taipei International Book Exhibition adopted “The Multiverse” as its central theme. To TAAZE, every reader’s private reading list is its own Ma-verse. And for this occasion, Giloo has curated 10 films to join the multiverse spin. Universe spin, timeline split— who says it can’t be a resistance?
The exhibition takes “the human” as its central theme, reflecting on what it means to exist as a person in this world. It focuses on the intricate, interwoven relationships between self and self, self and others, and self and both physical and virtual environments. The exhibition title borrows from the existential concept of Dasein, or “being there,” to explore humanity’s presence in the here and now. Through this lens, the exhibition opens up multi-layered philosophical inquiries into the human condition and the nature of existence. In extending this curatorial theme, Jut Art Museum collaborates with Giloo, inviting participating artists to curate a selection of eight remarkable films that center on the question of being human. These works return to the essence of what it means to live as a person—interpreting, reflecting, and questioning the many dimensions of humanity, and inviting audiences to contemplate the meaning and possibilities of being born human.
【 CCC Comic Channel × Giloo Documentary “Frames of Autumn: A New Sensory Stroll through Manga” Series 】 Under incomprehensible threats and pressures, some people try to explain the situation, or even solutions. Once a hypothesis for how to cope is grasped, it seems one can ensure their own safety. However, things often happen without reason. Unlike conspiracies or rumors, facts usually lack logical cause and effect, and there's no formula that applies to everyone, everywhere, every time. But as long as we don't overthink or chew on it, we can pretend things won't happen to us. I've selected four films that depict the chaos in everyday life. Wishing you a pleasant viewing experience. 📖 "We Need to Talk About Kevin" pays homage to the short comic "Children Committing Mass Suicide": https://www.creative-comic.tw/zh/book/379/content
“Just let it go.” “Don’t overthink it.” “You’ve got this!” These are the last things a wounded heart wants to hear. What weighed heavier on Michael Phelps than his 23 Olympic gold medals? What was Robin Williams’ final wish, after a lifetime of making the world laugh through his own pain? And what did Swedish actor Björn Andrésen—hailed as “the most beautiful boy in the world” after Death in Venice—carry under that title? Giloo presents 5 powerful films and documentaries that delve into the realities of psychological trauma. Please—don’t tell them to “move on.”
"Is there truly no one as good as Mother?" Devotion, omnipotence, unconditional love—these definitions of maternal love are not inherent talents exclusive to women. Giloo presents five films featuring imperfect mothers, guiding viewers to reflect on the diverse forms of motherhood and womanhood. No one is born a mother, and love is something that must be learned.
The family is the most common and smallest unit of coexistence in modern society. Families across different eras and spaces each face their unique blend of joys and sorrows. When encountering difficulties, it's natural to feel that one's own problem is the hardest to solve, but it's also important to realize that no one's is easy. From the following selection of films, find resonance in the others' family stories, and see the unique essence of home.
As a female creator, what troubles me most is constantly facing categorization and labeling. Some even question whether I am too immersed in “lowercase,” dollhouse-like stories. But I believe that emotions often spoken about in private spaces are no less public in significance, and that ordinary life is not necessarily safe or uneventful. The five films I’ve selected all carry elements of the “feminine,” the uncanny, and the simultaneously mundane and surreal. At different points in my life, each of them has either explained or illuminated a lingering question, helping me better understand who I am—and where I’m headed.
As you step into the entrance of this “mental time capsule,” I believe each of us carries a main focus in mind. So I’d like to share my list of recommendations—as a bonus feature, in case you’re not quite ready to log out of the time capsule just yet.
