The 76th Festival de Cannes officially kicked off in 2023, bringing together filmmakers and cinephiles from around the world. Before this year’s winners are revealed, Giloo invites you to revisit 15 unmissable international gems from past editions—essential viewing for any Cannes enthusiast.
What is the best moment to watch movies? For me, it's Friday night, kicking off the holiday with a film—the best reward for myself. I'm sharing five of my private holiday movie picks with you: Truffaut's classic love triangle, "Jules and Jim" (or Shoot the Piano Player, based on context of 'classic love triangle' in Truffaut's work), the warm and delicate "The Passengers of the Night", "One Fine Morning", "Return to Seoul" which accompanies Freddie on her search for roots, and "March: The Southern South", looking back at Taiwan in March 1947.
I'm fascinated with "borders"—be they religious, ethnic, or national. Wherever there's a border, there's desire and there are stories. The purpose of a border is to prohibit passage, and yet, like a magical force, it draws people such as "On the Border" or Mexican refugees to seek out rumored, unknown territories. Whether one leaves actively or passively—due to livelihood, adoption, or war—once you step out of your homeland, returning becomes an even longer story.
How can we remember the pain and resistance, helplessness and belief, hatred and love we once experienced in the dark of night? Night serves as a metaphor and a space for inheriting historical secrets. People act in secret during the night, hoping to open their minds and initiate new possibilities before dawn breaks. The 2023 Autumn Festival, themed "Nights in Memory," invites artists to collectively confront the echoes and inspirations brought by every night in memory. Memories purged, replaced, hidden, and questioned in those dark nights are re-told through the transformation of creative language, bringing to light overlooked, concealed, or ambiguous stories, igniting the fire of memory in the darkness. The National Theater & Concert Hall, in collaboration with Giloo, has curated the "2023 Autumn Festival" online film exhibition. Through the vertical in-depth exploration of theater and the horizontal extension of cinema, we will have the opportunity to transcend divisions and discern the significance of the nights we have experienced in our lives.
