🌊 When noise takes over the ocean, can we still hear their voices?

Off the western coast of Taiwan, offshore wind power is rapidly expanding. Yet this hotspot of development is also the last habitat of the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin. With fewer than 50 individuals remaining, the population faces constant underwater noise and persistent threats to its survival.

Hearing from the Dolphin unveils the hidden reality beneath the ocean's surface through the perspective of cetacean pathologist and bioacoustics researcher Yang Wei-Cheng. The film serves as a poignant reminder: as we pursue green energy development, is there still room for other forms of life?

🎬 A journey to restore the horseshoe crab, revealing the island’s forgotten memories.

Hold The Hope (Tentative Title) follows the horseshoe crab restoration efforts on Taiwan’s main island. Weaving through culture, environment, and history, the film pieces together the fading memories of the bond between Taiwan and the horseshoe crab, while also portraying the challenges and hopes of restoration on the ground.

🐚 The forgotten living fossil

When people talk about Taiwan’s marine life, most tend to think of whales and dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, and crabs. Rarely does anyone remember the horseshoe crab—an ancient, living fossil. This creature, which has survived on Earth for over 400 million years, was once widely distributed along the north and west coasts of Taiwan’s main island and was deeply rooted in local religious practices and daily life. However, as large-scale coastal development accelerated, the horseshoe crab’s natural habitat gradually disappeared. The population on the main island has steadily declined, with only occasional sightings reported in recent years.

🔍 The Inspiration: It All Began with a School Project

The film began with the director’s interest in a campus horseshoe crab breeding project, which sparked a long-term documentation of horseshoe crab restoration efforts on Taiwan’s main island. Through the lens, the story follows three key individuals whose actions help piece together the forgotten memories between the horseshoe crab and this island.

Guardian of the Horseshoe Crab I: The Horseshoe Crab Temple and Yin-Tien Su

On the coast of Chiayi, environmental activist Yin-Tien Su has spent over three decades tirelessly protecting his hometown’s shoreline. He established the “Horseshoe Crab Temple” as a sanctuary dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of juvenile horseshoe crabs. His work stands as a long-term commitment and heartfelt hope for the restoration of the marine environment.

Guardian of the Horseshoe Crab II: Dr. Ming Che Yang, the Horseshoe Crab Scholar

At the same time, Dr. Ming Che Yang—the only scholar in Taiwan dedicated to horseshoe crab research—travels alone along the nation’s coastlines, from sandy beaches to muddy flats. Through fieldwork and historical records, he works to reconnect the deep-rooted ties between horseshoe crabs and Taiwan’s cultural heritage.

✧ Guardian of the Horseshoe Crab III: Keelung and the Memory of the Next Generation

In northern Taiwan, the city of Keelung is home to the “Horseshoe Crab School” program led by the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology. Through hands-on experience raising juvenile horseshoe crabs, students are encouraged to engage with and care for the natural world. Once known as the “Horseshoe Crab River,” Keelung is now revisiting its own history through the reappearance of this ancient species.

🌊 An ecological journey through time

Hold The Hope (Tentative Title) is more than an ecological documentary about the horseshoe crab — it is a journey through culture, history, and the environment. Set against the backdrop of the Anthropocene and the looming Sixth Mass Extinction, the film invites viewers to reflect on the once-intimate but now fading connection between humanity and the natural world.
