🌿 About “Youth”
The Youth trilogy, directed by Wang Bing, focuses on Zhili, a garment manufacturing hub located 150 kilometers from Shanghai. This area is densely packed with small and medium-sized clothing factories, particularly for children's apparel, and attracts a steady influx of young migrant workers from rural regions in Anhui, Henan, and the upper Yangtze River. These workers, mostly in their early twenties, come from all over China, yet share strikingly similar lives.
The first chapter, Youth (Spring), documents their long workdays—over ten hours in crowded workshops where the line between labor and daily life nearly disappears. Amid this intense rhythm, they attempt to form friendships or romantic relationships, which inevitably shift under seasonal changes and familial pressures.
In Youth (Hardtimes), the second film, the narrative takes a more dramatic turn. Workers witness a factory owner, overwhelmed by debt, assault a supplier, and others fleeing with unpaid wages. The laborers find themselves isolated, overworked, and left with nothing in return.
The final installment, Youth (Homecoming), follows these workers as the Lunar New Year approaches. With factories shutting down, most begin their journey home—while a few remain, anxiously waiting to be paid so they can afford a train ticket back.
Spanning five years of filming, the trilogy presents an unvarnished, non-interventionist portrayal of today’s youth—capturing their struggles, decisions, and resilience through Wang Bing’s restrained and truthful camera work.
