Veteran Taiwanese documentary filmmaker Chu-chen Hsiao has long focused on Taiwan’s history, grassroots culture, and collective memory. Through a deeply humanistic lens, she captures overlooked stories with nuance and care. She won the Golden Horse Award for Best Documentary for two consecutive years with The Legend of the Red Leaf and The Silver Hairpin. Her films The Dove Project: 20 Years of Taiwan New Cinema and How We Make Films document the creative journeys of dozens of Taiwanese filmmakers, and are considered essential works in the study of Taiwanese cinema.
Every documentary begins with a pitch—a single sentence, a fragment of footage, an unfinished idea spoken aloud on a stage, met with both scrutiny and anticipation. CCDF (Chinese Doc Forum) is precisely such a starting point, a place where ideas are given the chance to be seen. This collection brings together works that were once presented on the CCDF stage, and which went on to complete the long journey of filming, editing, and finally reaching an audience. What began as a single pitch was shaped and refined over years, becoming images that could truly be watched, discussed, and remembered. Through this curation, we hope to look back at the long, often unseen distance each of these works traveled—from being pitched to being finished. That distance is, perhaps, the most honest and most difficult journey a documentary filmmaker undertakes.
Taiwan may be small, but it has never stood apart from the world. From the semiconductor industry that reshaped the global technology landscape and Kinmen at the frontline of geopolitics, to Chien-Ming Wang on the stage of Major League Baseball and folk beliefs deeply rooted in family memory, these four films explore Taiwan through technology, history, sports, and culture—revealing how the island meets the world, and how, through each encounter, it has carved out a place of its own.
