Oh, the allure of looking back and reminiscing for better days gone by… Nostalgia develops in us sentimental creatures for a multitude of reasons, be it dissatisfaction of the present, an impending doom for the future, or the painful realisation of past mistakes. The most poignant form of nostalgia materialises when the present has passed the point of no return. Force majeure and the ones that got away. Films on the list captured distinct era in the personal or societal past, that shine light on our inescapable present, for better or worse. Might we become better beings when we come out from the other side. “If we should weep when clowns put on their show, If we should stumble when musicians play, Time will say nothing but I told you so.” If I Could Tell You - W.H. Auden
This programme brings together six experimental films made in Hong Kong during the 1960s and 70s, five of which are featured in Law Kar’s memoir documentary Cinema Strada. Created under British colonial rule, these works articulate the intellectual, cultural, and emotional conditions faced by Chinese filmmakers navigating a fractured society. Through radical forms and non-linear structures, the films register anxieties around identity, displacement, and political silence. More personal works explore repressed sexual desire in young men, functioning as metaphors for broader social constraints. Together, these films reveal experimental cinema as both private expression and historical witness. Perhaps it’s because I grew up in a crowded, complex city that I’ve always been drawn to films set in urban landscapes. The dense weave of skyscrapers and winding streets has a certain allure, holding countless souls and stories within. I like to quietly observe these passing lives—moments of movement, waiting, and everyday fragments. It’s not just about seeing the world, but about finding, within these intersecting paths, a version of myself I once knew.
