“If a person stays in a place long enough, part of their soul will remain there.” These words, spoken by the protagonist of my documentary, not only profoundly shaped the way I see my hometown and the places where I grew up, but also became a kind of revelation. I used to fear that these places would become unfamiliar, or even disappear entirely. Yet this sentence taught me how to look gently at disappearance and loss. The films in this program gaze upon living, breathing lives, observing how each person leaves a part of their soul in the places where they have lived, wandered, or stayed.
This selection uses film to document the unspoken issues within Malaysia's diverse and complex culture. Through this film list, cinema presents the intricate ethnic identities, religious cultural divergences, and the challenges of coexistence on this land.
Since its establishment in 1962, the Golden Horse Awards have not only represented the highest honor in Chinese-language cinema but also witnessed countless filmmakers grow from their first attempts to the shaping of distinctive artistic voices. This curated selection highlights six directors nominated this year — Shen Ke-shang and Pan Ke-yin for Best New Director, as well as Lee Chun-shek, Liao Ke-fa, Chong Keat-aun, and Tsao Shih-han for Best Director — revisiting their earlier, defining works. Through this collection, we invite audiences to rediscover how these filmmakers use cinema to respond to the self, society, and their times. By tracing their creative beginnings, we also glimpse the ever-evolving vitality of Chinese-language cinema.
Does our nation's treatment of minority groups truly live up to the beautiful name "Formosa"? Migrant workers who perish far from home, fishermen and sex workers on the fringes of the city… they leave their homes behind to make a living, only to face discrimination, exhaustion, and even restrictive, unequal laws. On one side lies a struggling homeland, on the other, a new land that offers no refuge—where, then, do outsiders truly belong?
How can we remember the pain and resistance, helplessness and belief, hatred and love we once experienced in the dark of night? Night serves as a metaphor and a space for inheriting historical secrets. People act in secret during the night, hoping to open their minds and initiate new possibilities before dawn breaks. The 2023 Autumn Festival, themed "Nights in Memory," invites artists to collectively confront the echoes and inspirations brought by every night in memory. Memories purged, replaced, hidden, and questioned in those dark nights are re-told through the transformation of creative language, bringing to light overlooked, concealed, or ambiguous stories, igniting the fire of memory in the darkness. The National Theater & Concert Hall, in collaboration with Giloo, has curated the "2023 Autumn Festival" online film exhibition. Through the vertical in-depth exploration of theater and the horizontal extension of cinema, we will have the opportunity to transcend divisions and discern the significance of the nights we have experienced in our lives.
