Starting abruptly, ending just as suddenly, the short story in literary awards is an art of precise cuts. Often, the entire piece serves a singular, rare, fleeting thought, or the echoing aftermath when hearts collide—once the meaning is conveyed, it can conclude. There's no clinging or indulgence, just a crisp detachment, like a wind chime in summer, leaving no trace after the breeze passes.

Looking back on 2021—a year shaped by a disrupted daily rhythm, rising geopolitical tensions, and unforgettable moments on the Olympic stage—Giloo presents nine of the year’s most popular films. We hope each one leaves a lasting impression on your heart.
As a comic artist whose work takes root in personal experience and carries the qualities of a novel, I often find myself searching for traces of the narrator within other people’s stories. No matter the genre, the people, events, and objects that appear in a story are never entirely “fictional.” From the central plot or a pivotal incident, to something as subtle as a character’s temperament or quirks—these nuances often stem from the long-term observation and quiet accumulation of a sensitive soul. In this light, film is, in many ways, a series of sugar-coated documentaries. They’ve been made sweet and easy to digest—but if you truly chew on them, you’ll come to realize: beneath that coating lies a core made up of the very life that unfolds around us, every single day.
“How did writing a novel become such a deadly thing?” — Terrorizers They say there's nothing new under the sun. But once we step into the world of fiction, all the fuss, the unnecessary drama, the meaningless conflict—suddenly becomes the very engine that makes a story move. The meaning of “realism” is turned on its head. Imagination begins to feel more reasonable than reality. Only then can we fully immerse ourselves in each film’s unique narrative world— in the internal logic of its imagery, in the madness that somehow feels perfectly ordered. Because in fiction, as in dreams: Whatever happens, makes sense.
The world is too ugly. Even without testing positive, I still want to isolate myself. Isolation takes you, yourself—as your own company—and some good films. Return to the way of living alone. Remember what it feels like to be alive. To deal with the things you don’t like, sometimes all you need to do is deal with yourself. You’re carrying baggage—of course you are. But maybe it’s time to sort through it. Take only what you love. Leave the rest behind. After all, life is long. If you’re going to carry heavy things, make sure they matter. I can’t promise you’ll like these films. But I like them. And I like the feeling of watching a film alone.
"Everyone starts out wanting to be kind." Four best friends who once shared everything find their bond shattered by a single secret. A woman dates a man who looks exactly like her first love—until the real one, long missing, reappears. Upon discovering her friend has fallen for her ex, she abruptly turns back to find him. A recently widowed man meets a silent female chauffeur who changes the course of his grief. From Locarno to Cannes, Berlin, Venice, and the Oscars, Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, hailed as the heir to Japan’s cinematic masters, gently yet unflinchingly captures stories of intimacy—at once enchanting and cruel—through his lens.
The recent buzz around “the multiverse” ultimately points to something simple yet profound: our lives are shaped by the choices we make—big or small, moment by moment. Each film in this selection invites you to reflect on your own path. Was there a decision you made at a certain time that led you to become who you are today? And have you ever found yourself wondering— what if I had chosen differently? What would my life look like now?
We each reconcile with the world in our own way, and everyone has their shining moments. But how do we become a glowing stone in the mire of life? It's about loving all the unknowns on the path ahead, just like the diverse characters inhabiting films. In different eras and settings, for a fleeting moment, similar emotions resonate, and then you realize that those beautiful or weary faces on screen can be you, and can be me. And our faces will all be gently caressed by the same breeze. It turns out, we exist for these very moments.
