Giloo presents a curated selection of finalists and award-winning works from the Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF), capturing the trajectories of individual lives shaped by era shifts, social structures, and cultural traditions. The narrative scope expands from the frontlines of war and resistance to everyday anxieties, the complexities of tradition, and philosophical reflections on the soul. The lens shifts from macro-level upheavals to an intimate gaze. We witness individuals seeking exits from systemic oppression, debating existence through traditional rituals, and attempting to summon lost souls through song and imagination amidst the embers of trauma. This is a profound dialogue that delves into the subtle nuances of life, inviting you to experience the true weight of memory and action.

What is Taiwan? What does Taiwan have? Our imagination of Taiwan’s future depends on how we choose to read Taiwan. The Taiwanese documentaries selected by Giloo aim to offer a multifaceted and in-depth perspective—allowing us to empathize with the struggles and efforts of the Taiwanese people, uncover the richness of this land, confront its challenges, and analyze the issues that shape life on this island.
Taiwan — a small island bearing the memories of centuries. Taiwan — a land that has seen bloodshed time and again, and now stands as a democracy. What is Taiwan? What will Taiwan become? The answers depend on how we understand the past, and how we imagine the future.

In the process of democratic transition or operation, it is crucial to examine how past regimes or collective atmospheres have violated human rights. Tracing a nation’s dark history is not about seeking revenge, but about rewriting collective memory to reflect on systemic failures and prevent history from repeating itself. It is also a way to restore the innocence of victims and begin a dialogue of reconciliation through the wounds torn open by past atrocities—so that we may learn to coexist. Giloo Documentaries presents a curated selection of films on transitional justice, hoping that those of us living in today’s democracy will better cherish the hard-earned freedom in Taiwan.
The Women Make Waves International Film Festival in Taiwan is Asia’s first issue-based film festival focusing on women. Since its founding 29 years ago, it has been dedicated not only to promoting women's work in cinema but also to introducing Taiwanese audiences to films rich in gender discourse and humanistic vision. Giloo presents a curated selection of award-winning and officially selected films from the festival — both fiction and documentary — inviting you to revisit and celebrate these powerful works.
