Featuring top selections from prestigious film festivals like Golden Horse Awards and Golden Harvest Awards, as well as many highly anticipated emerging works for you to explore anytime, anywhere!
A good story doesn’t need to be long! Giloo presents nine short films by emerging Taiwanese directors, delivering bold and punchy cinematic language that challenges everything you thought you knew about film.
Founded in 2012, the Kaohsiung Shorts grant program aims to establish Kaohsiung as Taiwan’s hub for short film production. The initiative encourages creators to break boundaries and clichés, unleash their creativity, and express local cultural identity through film. To date, the program has supported the production of over 100 short films, making it one of the most prominent and closely followed short film initiatives in Taiwan. This selection features 20 Kaohsiung Shorts completed between 2019 and 2021, spanning narrative, animation, and experimental genres. With a wide range of themes and distinct storytelling styles, these works showcase the rich creative energy of contemporary Taiwanese short filmmaking.
Whenever I hear someone say, “They continue to give so much for each other—after all, they’re family, and blood is thicker than water,” I can’t help but think of this: In every family, there are at least two people who share no blood relation at all. So how can a phrase like “blood is thicker than water” possibly account for all the effort, pain, and complexity woven into those relationships? This exhibition presents five short films, each exploring a different kind of relationship. Some are bound by blood, while others reveal that sometimes, water runs thicker than blood. I often think of a line from The World Between Us: "In a family, people hurt each other. But they don’t heal each other." Perhaps that’s just what it means to be human—so clumsy at love, and yet so desperate for it.
An elderly political prisoner battling Alzheimer’s, a ghostwriter who starts a martial arts film company after release, a teenage boy drifting between virtual networks and real life, an old woman singlehandedly raising her intellectually disabled son, a directionally challenged writer carrying 37 keys, a father whose voice is ignored both in life and death, and a banyan tree that has silently witnessed decades of neighborhood change. How do they confront the challenges and setbacks brought by society? Continuing the acclaim of the previous three editions, Giloo now presents the fourth wave of its “Taiwan Shorts Knockout” series—seven powerful short films that delve into the everyday struggles and stories unfolding in Taiwanese society.
This film selection brings together the interests of our band members, approaching the creators' thoughts from various angles—from ghosts, magic, and realism, to independent music and food culture—also reflecting our mutual inspiration.
