A good story doesn’t need to be long! Giloo presents nine short films by emerging Taiwanese directors, delivering bold and punchy cinematic language that challenges everything you thought you knew about film.
When everyone is almost drowning in the age of social media, the non-profit media outlet The Reporter insists on going into the field, reclaiming the craft of on-site reporting and investigation. Beyond in-depth articles, visual stories, comics, and podcasts, we also use the lens of documentary film. Our aim is to breathe freely and calmly amidst the clamor of opinions, grasp knowledge, and deeply understand the public issues that are vital to us. Hey, seeing is believing – let's protect Taiwan together with good journalism.
A boy who survived ethnic cleansing, a sled athlete pushing the limits of the body, a protester labeled a rioter, a former firefighter painting cat graffiti on the streets of Tamsui… These individuals, each carrying their own story, leave behind glimpses of life through the camera lens — and in doing so, offer living proof of their communities' existence. Follow Giloo on a journey through lives of every kind — there's always a greater story waiting to be discovered.
In a foreign city, I watched film after film. Each story, tenderly written, spoke of home and youth—and more than once, I found myself in tears in the darkness of the theater. I thought of the faraway South, of streets I once raced through, of words once spoken, of songs once sung. In this constant loop of remembering and returning, I heard the call of a life that can only be lived once. Summer is ending, and soon I will leave this place again. I’ve chosen five films—a quiet offering, for the teenager you once were.
As long as the camera is running, recording begins from the very first moment. This act of recording is the source of vitality for images and film. In this era, images aren't exclusive to cinema; they are also a vessel for art, belonging to every possibility.
The sun rises as usual, yet beneath the calm facade of everyday life, inner storms quietly brew. One turns from a failed voice actor into a ruthless debt collector; another faces high-risk labor with youthful restlessness and longing. A model student secretly hones a dragon dance finishing move, while someone else searches through a sea of strangers for their fated goose. Some mourn the passing of animals; others silently plan to forget a lost love. Following the success of the first and second waves, Giloo now presents the third installment of “Taiwan Shorts Knockout”, featuring six exceptional Taiwanese short films that invite you to step into these characters’ hidden inner worlds.
In the cracks along the city’s edge, a hippie loses their way, while a stray dog watches humankind. A boy bids farewell to confinement and walks into the sea. There are no parties on the prairie—everywhere feels the same.
